  • Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

I recently had to archive large files on a DVD and used Winzip to accomplish this task. As many of my regular readers know, I am obsessed with archiving my digital photos. I have written several posts regarding my experiences with archiving, including my workflow. While I mainly talk about archiving my photos, I also have been archiving my home videos. This is where I encountered a problem.

I archive my data onto Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs, which can hold up to 4.7 GB of data. The problem with some of my videos, is that I have downloaded an entire DV tape, which produced video files that are 12 GB in size. I have tried to split the video into separate videos (there is more than one on a tape), but haven’t had much luck. I decided to instead just split the file into smaller pieces so it would fit on several DVDs. I’ll explain how I did that in this post.

Removing Broken Links in Your WordPress Blog

Removing broken links from your WordPress blog is important, not only from a SEO perspective, but also from a usability standpoint. In my last post I talked about managing your WordPress database using the WP-DBManager plugin. This plugin was one of two that I installed to help manage Technically Easy. This week I will look at another.

One of the difficult tasks to perform with regards to a WordPress blog is the process in finding and removing broken links in your posts. If you have been blogging for many years, then chances are many of your older posts have links that no longer work. The plugin I will discuss in this post finds and notifies you of all broken links it finds in your posts.

  • How to Reset the D-Link DIR-628 Wireless Router

How to Reset the D-Link DIR-628 Wireless Router

A few posts ago I wrote a post titled Securing the D-Link DIR-628 Wireless Router. In that post I outlined the steps needed to secure that particular wireless router. Securing a wireless router is extremely important to prevent others from accessing your network and Internet from their computers.

There are times, however, where you may need to reset your router back to the factory defaults. You may need to do this if a setting you changed is preventing you from connecting to your router or the Internet, or you don’t know the password to access your router. It is easy to reset the DIR-628 router back to the factory defaults, which I outline below.

  • Fix: Removing WindowsClick From Your Computer

I recently had the opportunity to fix a computer that was having issues with a virus/trojan/rootkit. I included all three in the list because I had no idea what I was looking at when I first heard of the issues. I was told that when the owner of the machine would perform a search in Google, every link that they clicked on would be redirected to a URL that included “windowsclick”.

While doing some research, I found a solution to the issue, but it was a complicated solution. I instructed the owner to install both anti-virus and anti-spyware tools and then run them to see what was found. Upon trying to run an anti-spyware tool, a new problem presented itself: the tools would load but wouldn’t run. Not wanting to give up, I asked the owner to drop off the computer and I’ll have a look. After some research I managed to clean the computer, and here is how I did it.

  • Blog Traffic Stats – Two Years Later

I was debating about writing another yearly update post, mostly because I didn’t think it would add any value for someone to read it. As I thought about it some more, I decided to write it because I figured it may add some value.

One of the hardest parts about starting a web site or blog, at least for me, was generating traffic. It is always hard to put your hard work into something and not receive much traffic. I decided to publish my yearly traffic statistics and other information to show what is possible after two years.

  • Remove Navigation Links For Static Pages in Blogger

Remove Navigation Links For Static Pages in Blogger

I recently received a comment on one of my posts that explain how to create static pages in Blogger regarding removing the navigation links. These links are usually located at the bottom of a post and allow a visitor to navigate to the next or previous posts of the current post.

I decided to look into how to do this as it doesn’t seem that difficult to do. After some testing I managed to hide those navigational links from static pages in Blogger. Let’s look at how to do this.
