    Scanning Old Photos? Get VueScan

I have been archiving some of the old photos, negatives, and slides that are lying around my house. As with most people, many are located in unlabelled boxes that are not organized in any way. Besides being unorganized, the other issue is that there are no safe copies of the originals, so if I was to lose my house for some reason, such as a fire, then all these memories would be lost.

I decided to scan in as many of these originals as I can, and then back them up as I have done with my digital photos. Unlike digital photos, however, scanning, the photos, slides, and negatives takes more time and effort than simply taking a picture. For the scanning process, I use a tool called VueScan.

  • Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

I recently had to archive large files on a DVD and used Winzip to accomplish this task. As many of my regular readers know, I am obsessed with archiving my digital photos. I have written several posts regarding my experiences with archiving, including my workflow. While I mainly talk about archiving my photos, I also have been archiving my home videos. This is where I encountered a problem.

I archive my data onto Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs, which can hold up to 4.7 GB of data. The problem with some of my videos, is that I have downloaded an entire DV tape, which produced video files that are 12 GB in size. I have tried to split the video into separate videos (there is more than one on a tape), but haven’t had much luck. I decided to instead just split the file into smaller pieces so it would fit on several DVDs. I’ll explain how I did that in this post.

  • Blog Traffic Stats – Two Years Later

I was debating about writing another yearly update post, mostly because I didn’t think it would add any value for someone to read it. As I thought about it some more, I decided to write it because I figured it may add some value.

One of the hardest parts about starting a web site or blog, at least for me, was generating traffic. It is always hard to put your hard work into something and not receive much traffic. I decided to publish my yearly traffic statistics and other information to show what is possible after two years.

Convert a Microsoft Word Document to PDF for Free

Most people who have used a computer in the past have probably seen and read a PDF document. Many software and hardware manuals now come in a PDF version, or you can download them from their vendors. For those that don’t know about a PDF document, they are documents that will be displayed the same on any computer.

One popular question is how to create PDF documents from other applications. Microsoft Word is a popular word processing application, but it can’t natively save a PDF document. In this post I will walk you through the steps that will convert any Microsoft Word document to a PDF file for free.

  • Can You Succeed With Google’s Blogger Platform?

Can You Succeed With Google’s Blogger Platform?

It has been just over 3 years since I started Technically Easy. I have learned a lot within those three years, have made some mistakes (still do), met many great people, but more importantly, I continue to learn to this day. When I began blogging I started out on Google’s Blogger platform – mainly because it was a great way of learning how to blog as it was free and quick to setup.

Since that time, however, I have switch to a self-hosted WordPress blog. While there were many reasons why I switched, I still enjoy playing around with Blogger, and the templates. One of the questions that I see raised quite often on various blogs and forums is whether you can succed with Blogger?

  • How to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

How to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

The D-Link DI-614+ is an older model router, that may still be in use today, so it is important to understand how to secure the D-Link DI-614 wireless router. D-Link’s technical support doesn’t officially support this model, so if you happen to use this router, I’ll bridge the gap by providing instructions on how to secure the router.

As with all wireless routers, this one isn’t secured when it is first used. It is important, however, to secure the D-Link DI-614 wireless router before you start using it. The one interesting aspect, at least from what I can tell, is that there are two revisions of this router: one that only supports WEP, and a revision B that supports WEP and WPA. I’ll make note of these differences in the steps.

Tips to Track Telephone Conversions Online

The metrics we use to judge the performance and success of our websites have progressed down the years.

Initially it was all about quantity; how many visits you were getting to your website, usually monitored with a small hit counter that you proudly published on your website.

The number of visits to a website then suddenly became 2nd place to search engine rankings, with this new thing called “SEO” gaining widespread popularity, where people tried to gain search engine visibility without real consideration for anything else.

VIPRE Antivirus – Total Protection for Your PC

This post brought to you by Sunbelt Software. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have always talked about free antivirus products that you can use to protect your PC. For times where it was too late, I have also mentioned free products that you can use to remove threats from your computer. This time, however, I will look at a product that isn’t free, but is a very effective application for protecting your computer.

The application is VIPRE antivirus. While it isn’t a huge player in the antivirus market, it is still a very good product. To start with, it has a ICSA labs certification, and as received a VB100 award. Both of these accolades are usually give to software that is very effective at protecting your PC.
