  • Internet Connection Slow in Windows 7

Internet Connection Slow in Windows 7

I like tinkering with my operating systems. I change many settings from their defaults, and sometimes the settings improve things, while other times it may break something. After I recently began exploring Windows 7, I began tinkering with some connection settings to see what they do.

Unfortunately, I had changed several settings and then realized that my broadband Internet had slowed down to a crawl. My highspeed became dialup speed. In order to solve the problem I began to undo some of the changes until I found the culprit. I eventually found the problem, which I explain in this post.

  • Traffic Stats: June 2011

    Traffic Stats: June 2011

Last month traffic for Technically Easy started off where May ended. I received steady traffic throughout the month, and also had my one day best total ever for this blog. I once again learned that with blogging there are going to good days and bad days as I also had my worst traffic day in about a year a few days later.

Blogging can be frustrating at times, mainly because when it comes to traffic there is very little that we can control. Sure we can look at generating backlinks, and use social networking to the best of our ability, but in reality, those methods just help enable traffic, it doesn’t guarantee that our blog will actually receive traffic. Let’s look at last month’s traffic numbers so you can see what I mean.

  • Securing the D-Link DIR-628 Wireless Router

Securing the D-Link DIR-628 Wireless Router

I have written a few guides about securing a wireless router. All the guides in the past were for 802.11g routers, so the routers have been around for many years, and are quite common. This guide will concentrate on a newer router, with many more options.

The 802.11n proposed standard is becoming much more commonly supported in various networking devices, and has been for the last few years. This post will provide step-by-step instructions for securing an 802.11n device: the D-Link DIR-628 wireless router.

  • About the 802.11 Wireless Network Standards

I have written many posts regarding wireless networks on Technically Easy. Some of the most popular posts deal with resetting and securing a wireless network. Wireless technology has hit the mainstream over the last few years, especially with more people buying laptops and becoming more mobile.

Obviously, security is a major concern for most, so they may tend to not invest in wireless technology. For those that do, you are presented with many different network equipment that you can use. The network equipment is advertised as supporting several of the standard wireless networking standards. In this post I will briefly discuss each standard that has been created so you have some knowledge of what it all means.

  • Creating Clickable Web Site Header Images

I like to write posts that can help others complete a task, whether it is with computers, web sites/blogs, networking, or digital photos. Some times, I come across questions that get asked on a frequent basis. While the questions may seem to be simple to answer for some, I also realize that many people don’t have the technical knowledge others may have acquired through the years.

This post is going to talk about creating header images for a web site or blog, and how to make them link back to a home page. If you are new to HTML, creating such an image is very easy to do.

  • Blog Traffic Stats – One Year Later

In my previous post I talked about how Technically Easy evolved over the past year, as well as discussed the name, domain and logo. In continuing with my one year of blogging, I will now discuss the traffic Technically Easy has received over the past year.

For those new to web sites or blogging, you may have seen similar traffic stats to your site. Although the numbers aren’t huge by some standards, they are still good for a one year old site.

  • My Thoughts on Web Page Designs

For those that have been reading Technically Easy for some time, you may have noticed that I modify my blog design every few months. Since switching over to WordPress, however, I have kept the same template, with a few modifications. In the past week, I have been creating a new blog design from scratch, and have thought about some of the design issues that I have seen online.

In this post I will talk about my thoughts on Web page designs, and what I think are common issues with many designs in use today.

  • Running Old DOS Programs in Windows XP or Vista

The first PC my family ever had had an 8088 4.77MHz processor, 640KB of RAM, 20MB hard drive and a CGA (4colors) graphics adapter. This was back in the early to mid-80s, but I remember how much fun I had playing many games on that system. Back then, of course, all games and applications ran in DOS, the operating system at the time.

I still enjoy some of the old games, however, computers have change much since that time and many of those DOS games are either difficult to get working in Windows, or don’t run at all. In this post I will introduce you to a free application that you can download that allows you to still run those old DOS applications in Windows XP or Vista.
