  • Alexa and Traffic Rank

There is much debate about using the traffic ranking data from Alexa. Some sites, such as the paid review sites, use it to determine the amount of traffic your site receives. Many individual webmasters don’t care much for the data as it doesn’t present an accurate picture of traffic.

I don’t put too much stock into the actual ranking on Alexa, as it may not provide a complete traffic picture. I do, however, know that many sites and individuals use it as sort of a gauge as to the amount of traffic your site gets. In this post I’ll explain what Alexa is, and provide a simple, yet controversial method of increasing your traffic rank.

  • Review: BloggerNoob

It seems most people that start a Web site or blog attempt to make money in some form from their endeavour. I for one have a few money making items on Technically Easy, so I fall into that category.

There are many new blogs that have started up with the main focus being making money online. This week’s review focuses on one of those blogs. This week I review a relatively new-comer to the “make money online” arena called BloggerNoob.

  • When to Use GIF and JPEG Format

I have written several posts on image formats, their advantages and disadvantages. The one thing I haven’t really discussed is when to use a particular format over another. Depending on that type of image you have will determine which format you should choose. Most people may just choose JPEG, however, there are many times GIF may be more suitable.

I will explain when to use either GIF or JPEG with images using examples and comparisons between the two formats. Hopefully this post will help you make a more educated decision.

  • Running Old DOS Programs in Windows XP or Vista

The first PC my family ever had had an 8088 4.77MHz processor, 640KB of RAM, 20MB hard drive and a CGA (4colors) graphics adapter. This was back in the early to mid-80s, but I remember how much fun I had playing many games on that system. Back then, of course, all games and applications ran in DOS, the operating system at the time.

I still enjoy some of the old games, however, computers have change much since that time and many of those DOS games are either difficult to get working in Windows, or don’t run at all. In this post I will introduce you to a free application that you can download that allows you to still run those old DOS applications in Windows XP or Vista.

  • Review: Anything for Free

There are many web sites that offer or provide information about free stuff. Some of the sites are quite useful, while others are just scams. I rarely visit them, but this week I’ll look at a blog focused on this topic.

While the author does attempt to keep the blog focused, it appears that at times it is hard to maintain. Unfortunately, there are a few other issues, besides the focus, with the blog that is reviewed this week.

  • Unlock Features of Your Canon Digital Camera

My first digital camera that I bought was a Canon G2 in 2002. I liked the camera because it took great pictures, included a rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery, and was able to take RAW pictures. When my G2 broke, I was provided with a Canon S3 IS because of the warranty. The S3 in itself is a great camera, and includes some features that the G2 didn’t have, like the the TTL (Through-The-Lense) viewfinder.

The one option that I do miss, however, is the ability to take RAW digital photos. I always liked editing my images before printing, and RAW photos allowed me to do that better than JPEGs. Recently I stumbled upon a utility that will allow my S3 to take RAW photos as well as change other previously unavailable settings.

  • The PNG Image Format

I have written posts about the JPEG and TIFF file format, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Digital cameras use the JPEG format because of it’s small size, so you can store more photos on a memory card. The downside to the JPEG is that is is lossy compression, so you lose some data with each save.

An alternative to the JPEG file format is the TIFF format. While you won’t lose any informatoin with the TIFF format, you will require a lot of disk storage as each file can be quite large. For those looking for another alternative, you can try using the PNG format, which is a nice compromise between the two previous image types.

  • OIOpublisher: The Easy Way to Provide Ad Space on Your Blog

For the past few months I have offered private advertising on Technically Easy. You can see the banner ads in my right sidebar, and in the header. In the past I have tried various online ad providers, but didn’t have much success. When I did have success, I was usually paid a percentage of what I actually charged.

A few months ago I looked into OIOpublisher, which is a WordPress plugin. Since then I have sold several ad spaces through OIOpublisher, and have made 100% of what I sold. In this post I look at OIOpublisher and what it provides in terms of advertising for your blog.
