Warning: You’re Spending Way Too Much on That Pre-Built Gaming Computer

In the modern gaming world, no platform is as rich or as rewarding as is PC gaming. Gaming on the PC offers better graphics, superior multi-player options, better gameplay, and overall a better gaming experience. However, one reason why most gamers are still playing on a console is that they believe the cost of getting a computer good enough to play the top games is way too high. And, rightly so…

If you look at the cost of the “high-end” gaming computers that some manufactures are producing, it’s obvious why more gamers aren’t switching to the PC. They’re too damn expensive.

For just a smidge over $3,000 you can get a pre-built computer that promises to play any game on the highest settings. It’s not reasonable at all, but people pay those prices. Unfortunately for them, they could’ve saved themselves thousands of dollars if instead of buying their computer pre-built, they instead bought the components and built it themselves…

  • How to Secure the D-Link DIR-615 Revision E Wireless Router

How to Secure the D-Link DIR-615 Revision E Wireless Router

As with all wireless routers sold, the D-Link DIR-615 Revision E isn’t sold in a secured fashion. The security of the wireless router is the responsibility of the owner.

While securing a wireless router may seem like a daunting task, most home wireless routers require the same settings to be changed to secure the router and wireless network.

What needs to be changed for the D-Link DIR-615 wireless router are broken down into three sections, that will hopefully help to understand what is being changed on the router.

To secure the D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, use the following steps:

    Note:

Before securing your router ensure that you are connected to the router using a network cable, and not connected using wireless. Also, when accessing the administrator dashboard, it is best to try using Internet Explorer. Many router dashboards tend to work best with this Web browser.

    1. Changing Administrator Credentials

The first thing you should do when securing your wireless router is to always change the admin password. Passwords will have a well-publicized default password for the admin account on your router, so changing it will make it difficult for unauthorized individuals to gain access to your router.

Changing the admin password will only affect logging into the dashboard of your router – where the router settings are located. This won’t secure your wireless network, which is outlined in the next section.

To change the admin password on the DIR-615 version E3, use the following steps:

    1. Open your Web browser and navigate to http://192.168.0.1. The login page will be displayed on the screen.
    2. Select “Admin” from the “User Name” dropdown list.
    3. Keep the “Password” field blank.
    4. Click the “Login” button.
    5. From the top menu, click the “Tools” option.
    6. DIR-615 - Tools Option

    7. Under the “Admin Password” section, enter a new password for the administrator. Ensure the password is long and complex to make it secure.
    8. Under the “User Password” section, enter a new password, but make it different than the admin password.
    9. In the “Administration” section, use the following options:
      • Enable Remote Management: Unchecked.
      • DIR-615 - Administrator Settings

      • Click the “Save Settings” button at the top of the page to save the passwords.
      • Wait for the settings to save, and then log in with the new admin password.

    2. Securing the Wireless Network

After changing the admin password to your wireless router, you can now go ahead and secure the wireless network. By securing the wireless network, this will prevent unauthorized users from connecting to your network.

To secure your wireless network, use the following steps:

    1. Log in to the router with the “Admin” user if you have not already done so. Once the “Setup” page is displayed, click the “Manual Internet Connection Setup” button.
    2. From the left menu, click the “Wireless Settings” option.
    3. DIR-615 - Wireless Settings

    4. Next, click the “Manual Wireless Network Setup” button near the bottom of the page.
    5. DIR-615 - Manual Wireless Network Setup

    6. In the “Wi-FI Protected Setup” section use the following options:
      • Enable: Uncheck
    7. In the “Wireless Network Settings”, use the following options:
      • Enable Wireless: Checked
      • Wireless Network Name: Enter a name for your wireless network
      • 802.11 Mode: Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b
      • Enable Auto Channel Scan: Checked
      • Channel Width: Auto 20/40 MHz
      • Visibility Status: Visible

      Note:

There is always some debate about hiding – not broadcasting – your SSID. The truth is not broadcasting the SSID does nothing to secure your network. Hackers can see both visible and hidden SSIDs with the tools/applications they use. While the average user may not use such tools, they won’t be able to gain access to your wireless network if you have it secured with WPA/WPA2 and a good passphrase.

    8. In the “Wireless Security Mode” section, use the following options:
      • Security Mode: WPA-Personal
    9. In the “WAP” section, use the following options:
      • WPA Mode: WPA2 Only (If you have issues connecting with this option, then try “Auto (WPA or WPA2)” instead.)
      • Cipher Type: TKIP or AES
      • Group Key Update Interval: 3600
    10. In the “Pre-Shared Key” section, use the following options:
      • Pre-Shared Key: Create a long and complex key that will be used to gain access to your wireless network. This is the main security for your wireless network, so the longer the better.
    11. DIR-615 - Wireless

    12. Click the “Save Settings” button at the top of the page.

At this time your wireless network is now secured. To connect a wireless device to your network, you wll need to selected the SSID from the list of wireless networks, and then enter the pre-shared key you created.

    3. Additional Security Settings

There are a few additional security settings that you can do to provide even more security.

    1. Log into your wireless router using the “Admin” user and password.
    2. From the top menu, click the “Advanced” option.
    3. DIR-615 - Advanced Option

    4. From the left menu, click the “Advanced Network” option.
    5. In the “UPNP” section, use the following options:
      • Enable UPNP: Unchecked
    6. In the “WAN Ping” section, use the following options:
      • Enable WAN Ping Respond: Unchecked
    7. DIR-615 - Advanced Network Options

      Note:

The following settings are optional, and unless you are comfortable with changing IP addresses, I suggest you leave them as the default and skip the next two sections.

    8. From the top menu, click the “Setup” option.
    9. From the left menu, click the “Network Setings” option.
    10. In the “Router Settings” section use the following options:
      • Router IP Address: Change to something like 192.168.22.1
    11. In the “DHCP Server Settings”, use the following options:
      • DHCP IP Address Range: Set the range to the number of devices you will connect to your network. For example, if you changed your rotuer IP address to 192.168.22.1, and you have 3 devices, then set the range 192.168.22.100 to 192.168.22.102
    12. DIR-615 - Network Settings Options

At this point your D-Link DIR-615 is about as secure are you can get it. You can feel comfortable that only authorized users will be able to log into your wireless network.

  • Scanning The Choices in iPhone 5 Cases

Scanning The Choices in iPhone 5 Cases

In spite of the predictions of naysayers everywhere, the iPhone 5 has triumphed, by and large. While of course, the device isn’t perfect, and arguably nowhere near the incredible amounts of hype surrounding its release, it is an incredible piece of technology. But what about the less heralded, but equivalently useful accessories that go with it. What about iPhone 5 cases?

To a lot of users it might seem counter intuitive to buy a beautifully designed Apple product and cover it up in something else. After all, when Jonathan Ive and his team of talented product designers spend three months arguing over details as tiny as the nodes on a firewire, they probably aren’t expecting their creation to be permanently slipped into something else.

And yet, considering the hefty price tag or length of contract that usually accompanies such a shiny new toy, you can’t fault customers who want to make sure it won’t break the second it slips out of their hands. Which brings us nicely to the first type of iPhone 5 cases available- protective. The aim is simple: protect the device. But the amount of protection on offer is highly variable.

While basic silicone cases offer enough protection to save your phone from scratches and dust, they don’t stand a chance against the Incipio Atlas and LifeProof cases. For the adventurous ones who see it fit to take their devices with them while they’re snorkeling meters under the surface of the ocean, there are few better options available. The LifeProof in particular offers military grade protection at a military grade price point.

But what about those amongst us for whom the greatest conceivable threat is a pair of house keys and some loose change? Well the ‘feather’ version of the Atlas would suffice while also adding a unique shape to the phone. The only requirement in this case is that some protection for the device’s screen be included without compromising the comfort of touch and swipe gestures.

Stepping beyond mere protection, some users demand that the additional bulk in their pocket give them an additional bang for their buck. The HitCase for instance, matches it’s all round protection with a harness to allow users to treat their phone like it’s a GoPro. Alternatively, the Scosche Kickback Sport adds an inbuilt kickstand to turn your handheld device into a mini screen in an instant.

For the runners, the requirements naturally change. The aim here is to be able to strap the device onto an arm while ensuring no repeated adjustment is required to ensure the assistant applications can do their thing while you do yours. Belkin’s ProFit offering does all of that while also making space for keys and loose change in case you’ve got a recharge stop in mind after a run.

Now while all the iPhone 5 cases listed above aim to cater to one specific need, there are those of us who simply want basic protection with an added emphasis on style. In this case it is the emphasis on style that can have the greatest impact. Personalised iPhone 5 cases not only protect the phone from standard scratches and damage, but they also give each customer a unique opportunity to design.

Fun to make, they ensure that no two owners of the same device have to have the same look. Where one can choose an image of personal sentiment, the other can simply choose a graphic that represents his or her personal style. For those of us unimpressed with the standard range of looks available, customization proves to be a really liberating option.

After all, selecting iPhone 5 cases is about fulfilling the needs of individual customers in a way that the mass production of the iPhone 5 itself cannot account for.

  • Three Reasons Why Your Next Upgrade Should Be An SSD

Three Reasons Why Your Next Upgrade Should Be An SSD

When our beloved computers start to give us grief by slowing down and struggle to perform the simplest of tasks, many of us have traditionally resigned to the fact that we need to buy a new machine. That was until Solid-state Hard Drives (SSDs) came around.

You see, the storage inside our computers is often overlooked and taken for granted. As Dong Ngo from CNET puts it, “How many times have we asked ourselves where that Web page we’re viewing (like this one), the movie we’re watching, the song we’re listening to is stored, or even how the iPhone remembers to wake us up at 7 a.m every day?”

Take that in to consideration and you can start to imagine just how important that one component is. With that in mind, let’s look at three reasons why your next upgrade should be an SSD.

    Reliability

In context of Dong Ngo’s comments above, reliability could be considered the key benefit of upgrading to an SSD. Where a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) is made up of moving parts and prone to vibrations and physical damage, an SSD isn’t susceptible to mechanical failures because data is stored on microchips. This means that it can withstand tougher conditions without much risk of breaking in to pieces. The lack of moving parts inside SSDs also means that they operate in silence.

    Speed

This is probably the main reason why most people will make the transformation. Where a HDD has write speeds of 120MBps, a top of the range SSD will write that same file at 500MBps. To put that in perspective, those speed differences translate in to a MacBook Pro’s boot-up time being reduced from 40+ seconds to sub-20 seconds, applications opening in the blink of an eye and significantly faster file-transfer processes.

    Prolonged Product Life

Because of the significant performance upgrades that the SSD offers, it’s able to prolong the product lifecycle of your existing machine. Even if you own a laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor, the SSD upgrade provides more financial and efficiency value than purchasing a newer model and reduces the amount of effort required in moving files and a brand new set-up.

The main barrier facing consumers at the moment is the cost associated with SSDs. Although they have dropped in price, a Samsung 840 Pro (256GB) for example sells on Amazon from anywhere between £160-200. In comparison to HDD prices, it is quite expensive and beyond many budgets. Having said that, if your computer is causing you problems and making you consider buying a new one – perhaps an SSD may work out to be the cost-effective option after all.
