Changing Your Blog Posts’ Permalinks

When I visit a blog that has been created by a new blogger, I immediately notice that the permalinks to their blog posts haven’t been changed. By default, WordPress uses a confusing permalink structure for each post, which most new bloggers don’t realize.

It is important for those setting up a blog to ensure they have modified the permalinks of their posts from their default value. It isn’t hard to change the structure, and can be done even after you have published several posts.

What are Batch Files?

I recently was in charge of creating a silent install for an application. While many installations include a silent option, this one was a bit different. I had to also run other installs, as well as import registry settings, and also copy files.

To help me with this task I used a batch file that was easily able to handle everything I needed. If you haven’t used batch files before, then this post will explain what they are and how they can be used.

Blogger Logo

Update:

On September 9, 2009 Blogger introduced “Jump Links” that incorporates the <-- more --> tag, much like WordPress. This allows Blogger users to display posts excerpts easily in their blog. For more information, please read the help article on creating Creating ‘After the jump’ summaries.

Many blogs may display only a few paragraphs of a post, and then provide a link to the rest of the post. These blogs usually publish rather large posts, and would like to display several posts on they home page, without the page getting too large.

The PNG Image Format

I have written posts about the JPEG and TIFF file format, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Digital cameras use the JPEG format because of it’s small size, so you can store more photos on a memory card. The downside to the JPEG is that is is lossy compression, so you lose some data with each save.

An alternative to the JPEG file format is the TIFF format. While you won’t lose any informatoin with the TIFF format, you will require a lot of disk storage as each file can be quite large. For those looking for another alternative, you can try using the PNG format, which is a nice compromise between the two previous image types.

Unlock Features of Your Canon Digital Camera

My first digital camera that I bought was a Canon G2 in 2002. I liked the camera because it took great pictures, included a rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery, and was able to take RAW pictures. When my G2 broke, I was provided with a Canon S3 IS because of the warranty. The S3 in itself is a great camera, and includes some features that the G2 didn’t have, like the the TTL (Through-The-Lense) viewfinder.

The one option that I do miss, however, is the ability to take RAW digital photos. I always liked editing my images before printing, and RAW photos allowed me to do that better than JPEGs. Recently I stumbled upon a utility that will allow my S3 to take RAW photos as well as change other previously unavailable settings.
