Smartphones are costly gadgets that are highly susceptible to moisture. Moisture and water can damage the internal circuits by causing short-circuits. As such, leading smartphone manufacturers were looking for a viable solution to waterproof these costly gadgets. A Utah based company HzO has come up with an innovative way of waterproofing electronic devices like smartphones. This method is known as WaterBlock technology and smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung are likely to adopt and apply this technology in their forthcoming products.
How it Came
Although waterproof mobile phone was introduced in Japan in July, 2007 (F704i from Fujitsu), most smartphones that are now available are not waterproof. Users of smartphones have been facing several problems. Makers of HzO WaterBlock technology claims that a man who fell in the Mississippi River, failed to call for emergency support from his soaked smartphone. He eventually got drowned. The makers of HzO WaterBlock vowed to find a solution to avoid such mishap. This is claimed to inspire the WaterBlock technology.
The Company
HzO is a private company that earlier intended to buy popular electronic devices, coat them with WaterBlock technology and sell them. There were several technical problems in this process. In recently concluded CES (Consumer Electronic Show) 2012, held in Las Vegas they showed this waterproofing technology to Chairman of Samsung and impressed him. Other companies like Motorola, Panasonic and Apple have also shown their interest. Now, the company is likely to license the waterproofing technology to electronic device manufacturing companies like Samsung, Apple, and Motorola. The manufacturing companies are likely to integrate the waterproof technology while manufacturing the products.
How it is Different
There are waterproof casings available in the market for smartphones but most users hate to use them for their clumsy look. HzO WaterBlock technology found a way of keeping your device safe from moisture even if it gets submerged in water. The WaterBlock technology uses water repellent nano-scale film barrier for waterproofing. The company not only uses waterproof coating on the outer parts of the phone, it also applies the coating to internal components like logic boards, transistors and batteries. The thin and transparent coating is not visible and it does not add to the weight of the phone. As a result, your sleek smartphone maintains its smart look even after waterproofing.
Future Plans
HzO WaterBlock technology has the potential to revolutionize the portable electronic gadget industry. The technology is not only useful for smartphones but also likely to be used in tablets and other similar handheld electronic gadgets. The companies manufacturing sophisticated electronic gadgets are keen to adopt this technology.
Finally
Samsung and Apple are fierce competitors in field of smartphone and tablets. As such, if one of them adopts a remarkable technology like WaterBlock then the other is not in a mood to be left behind. Experts in the field of electronic devices predict that future gadgets from Samsung or Apple (like iPhone5) would be geared with WaterBlock.
