Last month saw traffic finally stabilize on Technically Easy after a few months of a minor decline. I was hoping to see that trend continue, and possible a little up swing as well in April, but I knew it would be a little difficult to continue the trend that I saw at the end of last year. Overall, thought, April was a good month with regards to traffic.
Steady Traffic
April say traffic continue to be steady, which is a trend that started in March. While it is nice not seeing traffic decrease, it would have been nice to see a nice slight increase. But I’ll take a steady traffic level over a decrease any day.
As you can see in the graph above, the traffic showed a slight increase over April 2011, which is always good to see. In terms of how much of an increase, the table below shows the numbers for both visits and pageviews comparing April 2012 to April 2011.
| Metric | April 2011 | April 2012 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visits | 67,880 | 84,383 | 24.31% |
| Pageviews | 94,489 | 116,196 | 22.97% |
Much like March, the year-over-year visits and pageviews increases were around 20-25%, which is a healthy increase for the monthly increase. In terms of comparing April to March, there was a slight increase in pageviews, but a minor decrease in visits. Of course, April also had on less day for reporting than March, so in reality the pageviews were higher and the visits between the two months were about the same.
Traffic Sources
In terms of traffic sources, search engines are still the largest source of traffic to Technically Easy. Unfortunately, this has also had a dramatic effect on traffic over the past few months as much of my older posts that discuss older technology are being searched less and less. Even though my rankings haven’t changed much, the decrease in searches has decreased my traffic.
As I have been saying for many months, I am still hoping to increase my referral and direct traffic numbers, but so far it has been a struggle in doing so. I don’t like having almost 90% of my traffic coming from search engines, as one algorithm change can have a dramatic effect on the traffic numbers
While I am happy with the traffic numbers for April 2012, I am hoping that I can start to increase the visits going forward. I will also continue to look at increasing both my referral and direct traffic numbers. With Google constantly changing their algorithm, it may impact my visitor numbers in the future.

Nicely done; it’s good to see that someone is doing well for themselves right now. I bounce around these blogs quite a lot, and these are the first traffic figures I seen posted that don’t display a decrease is hits. Nicely done.
Great traffic, and great that it’s from organic searches. Those folks are looking for what you have to offer. Sincerely appreciate your sharing your stats.
In Panda and penguin era TE still growing that’s amazing. congrats Paul Salmon, this shows your commitment.

Congrats awesome blog.
I can clearly say that that was a tremendous improvement you had, especially with the fact that search engines algorithms have been altered lately. Congrats to you!
congrats for good results, i think my luck is not good this time because of the penguin update.

Great numbers … Even my blog continues to receive steady traffic from past few months

One of my site was ranking on first page of Google but it is also hit by Penguin. Good luck for your success.
Wow, its always great to see your stats, looks like you have not yet been hit by any of the recent algorithm updates. I was recently been hit by Penguin but now I’m recovering from it gradually!

Sorry to hear about being hit by the Penguin update. So far so good from my end, but I am conscious of an algorithm change, as a sudden drop can greatly affect my traffic.
Good effort Paul. You’ve done well in these difficult times. It’s been tough as hell with Google’s updates and it is a bit concerning when a large percentage of the traffic is from one source… no one wants all their eggs in one basket…. but let’s just keep doing what our best and things will definitely pick up. That’s what I keep telling myself as theapptimes has had some deeply troubling months and its been pretty hard for me too!

With such a large portion of traffic coming from search engines, I am always concerned about my traffic dropping with each Google algorithm change. I keep encouraging myself to continue, as well, especially when my traffic dropped at the beginning of the year.
Hi Paul
As always a pleasure to follow your numbers. I had a big decrease in traffic for the last two weeks of April (my traffic dropped 35%). It seems to be a change on Google, because it was mainly my organic traffic that decrease. With that in mind I would have been happy for a steady traffic month like you had in April

Hi Thomas, thanks for stopping by. I’m sorry to hear about your drop in traffic, but I’m sure it will increase quickly. I’m hoping that my steady traffic levels will start to increase, and I’m hoping to reach my end-2011 levels.
Well, These statistics clearly showing the improvement of your blog than last year. Plus I agree with your point that you should never rely on one type of traffic, as one change can badly affect your blog.

I am hoping to find ways of increasing my referring and direct traffic. Relying on traffic from search engines alone is leaving me open to a drop in traffic if the algorithm changes.
Congrats, mate. That’s great to see you still can keep consistent traffic after many updates lately. This could be a good sign that you are going the right way.
Btw, does your PR increase today?

Thanks, Tuan. So far I haven’t seen an increase in my PR, was there an update?
It seems a definite improvement over the past year, taking into account that it has been a tough year for webmasters because of the changes in search engines algorithm.
Thanks, Jack. I am happy that I did manage to increase year-over-year, but I will still try to increase month-over-month as well.
Congrats! That’s a great rise!
