One of the biggest characteristics of video game development is that the sector must always be in a state of evolution in order to grab the attention of the public.
What this means is that each new incarnation of a video game must somehow be improved over the last, for example, in terms of the graphics quality or the speed. Video game developers have to utilize new technology in order to keep producing games that are considered worthwhile by the intended audience.

1. Graphic Realism
Graphics engines are often improving, allowing game developers to work on producing titles that are more realistic than before. This is especially important when it comes to specific types of video games, such as sports video games and fighting video games where the human characters need to be as detailed and realistic as possible.
Graphic realism plays an important role in how popular a video game is going to become, and so game developers are constantly attempting to produce more realistic video games. The latest and greatest football, basketball and baseball games are examples of what new technology is capable of accomplishing.
2. Visual Quality
Visual quality does not only matter in terms of realism, but also in producing highly detailed graphics for all types of video games. Even in video games that are not aiming for realism, such as role playing games or puzzle games, visually appealing and detailed graphics are important. As new technologies are developed surrounding graphics, the games that developers are creating are becoming increasingly visually appealing, as detailed and visually impressive video games are generally the most desired on the market.
3. Realistic Game Mechanics
Realistic game mechanics is another important part of game development and game developers are using a variety of new technologies in order to create game mechanics that are more lifelike in comparison to what they once were. Games like the Grand Theft Auto franchise rely on realistic game mechanics for weapons and fighting, driving and other areas of the game. As these games become increasingly realistic, their popularity skyrockets.
4. Downloadable Content
Downloadable content is another important part of how newer technologies are improving video games. Video game developers are creating a wealth of additional game content that can be downloaded or otherwise acquired in order to deepen and lengthen the playability of the game. When players are ready to add to the game after finishing the title on its most basic level, they can go online and download new content like additional weapons and levels, new challenges and other content in order to add to the playing experience.
Game developers are constantly working on harness new technologies that they can apply to video games to make them increasingly desirable. Gamers are constantly looking for more detailed, more realistic and more lifelike video games that offer downloadable and other extended content in order to keep the game going.
As new technologies are developed, they are applied to games that are currently under development to produce greater and greater gaming experiences.
How do you think games developers have used new technology in the games you play?

I really do believe so! Through new and advanced technology, very entertaining kind of video games are being produced. During my childhood days, I used to be playing games in what we call family computer (first kind of gaming console); in those times, the video quality is already outstanding but as plays station, xbox and other gaming consoles were released; different kinds of graphics, video quality and game mechanics which are more outstanding were released. This promotes more improvement and advancement to gaming consoles and gaming. Thanks a lot for sharing this!

While I am not a huge gamer, I do enjoy playing video games from time to time. I am astounded to see the life-like quality of the games, and with processors and GPUs getting more powerful each year, the games will only get bigger, more life-like, and more indepth.
I started playing video games with simple beeps for music and simple one colour character on the screen. Now games consist of an entire 3D world that you can explore until your hearts content.

With interest, I don’t personally believe that improved graphics ‘maketh’ the game. The number of times I turn back to the classics of gaming (such as Final Fantasy 7&8, Age of Empires 2 etc) that are terribly dated by now, but still an awful lot of fun to play.
New games tend to look polished and very detailed, but they lack longevity underneath their facade of graphics.

I also like to play the classic, older games. I grew up with those games, so when I play them it brings back good memory. I agree that graphics to make the game, but if the story of the game is good, the graphics can help to enhance it.
In terms of longevity, there are some recent games that do seem to stick around. The Elder Scrolls series of games are just such games. Since those games are so customizable with mods, they seem to last many years as players constantly enhance/add to the original game with a mod. Heck, Morrowind was released around 2002, and still has strong replay value today because of mods.

Lol, I used to love the old PC games before I got a nintendo in the 80′s! Pacman etc. It would be strange playing them now, I wonder if they’d be as much fun. In one of the Donkey Kong games on Nintendo there was a hidden game of the first ever PC donkey kong, brilliant.
