Adding a sitemap to Google’s Webmaster tools is one of the first tips you will be told to do when you first manage a web site or blog. It is an easy process to do, and you can get many benefits from it, such as monitoring how Google is indexing your pages, the external and internal links it finds, and any problems Google may find with indexing your site.
For Blogger users, the sitemap to your blog may not be easy to find. Blogger does have a built-in tool that can help you add your sitemap, but if other services can use a sitemap, you may want to know where the sitemap is located. The good news, is that it is easy to find.
Blogger Tells You Your Sitemap Name

When I was using Blogger I had to look up in the Blogger help and forums on where I could find a sitemap. I eventually found out that the atom feed produced by Blogger can be used as a sitemap. The trouble was trying to remember the feed URL each time I needed to use the sitemap.
For many web sites, the robots.txt file may contain the location of a sitemap for their site. Usually, a webmaster would need to create the entry into the robots.txt file for it to be included. For Blogger users, this is done automatically for you.
To find the location of your sitemap, use the following steps:
- Open up your web browser, and type in your Blogger blog’s URL.
- At the end of the URL add robots.txt.
For example, if the URL of your blog is http://myblog.blogspot.com, then enter http://myblog.blogspot.com/robots.txt
- Some text should now be displayed in your browser. Look for a line that starts with Sitemap:. The URL after that label is the location of your sitemap.
Using the example above, the line would look like:
Sitemap: http://myblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
- Back in Google’s Webmaster Tools, the domain name part of the URL would already be included, so you would just need to specify the feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated portion of the sitemap URL. If other sites are able to accept a sitemap, then you may need to include the entire URL
If in the future you are having problems with your sitemap, you can always pull up the robots.txt file to make sure your sitemap file hasn’t changed.

My friend you are a lifesaver, i have been looking for a way to add a site map to my blog for some time now. And most importantly you give us the right kind of info so we can make adjustments in the future, just in case the site map’s url changes like you said. Thanks for sharing this great article, cheers!!!

Thanks. and good timing too as I just came up with the need today. other hits to my search were nowhere near as good as this.
on March 9, 2009 at 6:14 am
Hi Paul. Thanks for this useful information.
Every Blogger.com webmaster must know this techniques.
and No need to go for this robots.txt page. but usually Google Sitemap will accept all xml pages. If your blog feed working properly means, No worries. But you have to submit your blog feed as sitemap URL.
I suggest atom.xml is good. But don’t use rss.xml. It will create errors in sitemap.

on December 20, 2009 at 11:12 pm
I’ve read elsewhere that if you have a feedburner redirect that you should use “feeds/posts/default?redirect=false”. Any chance you can explain why or if the one you listed in the post is better?
Thanks!
on December 22, 2009 at 9:13 am
I wouldn’t say it isn’t better, but Google Webmaster tools will look at the robots.txt file for a sitemap if one isn’t specified. The example you provide probably tells the feed reader, in this case the Webmaster tools, not to be redirected to the Feedburner feed from the standard Blogger feed.

Hi,
I was trying with atom.xml and rss.xml, both didn’t work, I was getting a message ‘invalid url’. Finally I came across this blog and pointed the sitemap to http://techmindviews.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated which worked.
Thank you very much.

Geeze. Your post is so essential. You made it so easy and Blogger didn’t help at all with this. I’ve been going nuts trying to find an .xml file or to figure out where the sitemap is located.
Much more important than just including the feed because this includes any updates or changes, whereas the feed does not.
Thank you.

on June 28, 2010 at 4:40 am
i found http://bicara-ku.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
is this my sitemap?
on June 29, 2010 at 3:37 pm
Yes, that would be your sitemap.
on July 22, 2010 at 8:36 am
another way is, in case if your robot.txt is blank;
1 – log into blogger.com, click ‘Design’ tab for the blog.
2 – click ‘Add Gadget’ on the side bar or footer, and find ‘subscription link’ in widget list. Add the ‘subscription link’.
3 – go to ‘google webmaster panel’, assuming you’ve completed verification, on left side bar goto ‘Site configuration’ and select ‘Sitemaps’. Click ‘Submit a sitemap’ and enter following choices or sitemap (at least three I know of);
a) http://[Blogger Blog URL]/atom.xml
b) http://[Blogger Blog URL]/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
c) http://[Blogger Blog URL]/feeds/posts/full
have fun!
on December 13, 2010 at 2:27 pm
This was much easier than I thought. Interestingly, Webmasters Tools is all too ready to accept “/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated” in their sitemap area – they even have your site name already typed in.
And if you have multiple blogspot blogs, you can simply shift from one to the next on that same “add sitemap” page by simply using the pull-down menu in the upper left.
Nothing like efficiency.

There shouldn’t be. The Atom.xml is another feed that is created by your blog. Most are familiar with the RSS feed as opposed to the Atom feed.

What more do I need to do or should I do to make use of what this sitemap does/can do for my blog/site?

Blogger automatically has a sitemap, which you can view with these steps. If you add your blog to Google’s Webmaster tools it will automatically pickup the sitemap, or you can also add it manually, if you choose.

A sitemap lists the overall structure of your entire site, so there isn’t a way to create one for individual pages. Is there a reason you want to submit one for each page?
on November 25, 2011 at 9:43 pm
Thanks for the quick response Paul.
The reason I ask is that is appears that Google Webmaster tools allows you to submit more than one sitemap for the same site. Is this correct or am I missing something. Thanks!

You can submit more than one sitemap, but I find one sitemap with all my pages works well. I’m sure there is a reason you can submit more than one, but for my blog I don’t really need more than one.

Very nice information …. A sitemap is really an important thing to get properly indexed in search engines like Google and others. However , RSS feeds can be added as sitemap but the main problem or it is that old blog posts are not properly indexed .Previously , I used to create my sitemap manually .But believe me , it was a laborious job and i felt really tired to do so .Later , I tried a XML sitemap generator script which worked magically and did everything for me …However , thnx for posting such useful article .

The older posts not being included in the sitemap is an issue when using a feed for your sitemap. You can however specify the number of posts to include, but if your site is well organized search engines should have no issue indexing old posts. All a sitemap does is help search engines find your content, it doesn’t guarantee that a page will be indexed.

Hallo.
I typed the link to my site plus the robot.txt extension but it resulted in an unfound search result. Is there any other way I can get the sitemap?
