There are many blogs for various niches online. Some blogs are focused specifically on a single niche, while others may focus on several niches. Those that do focus on several niches will hopefully focus on niches that complement each other, such as discussing PC games and video cards.
This week’s blog is really difficult to determine the niche. The author has chosen to discuss a variety of topics, which unfortunately doesn’t provide a nice flow for the visitors.
Web Site: Palanthir
Description: A Blog with variety of articles, news clippings, softwares, rare mp3s, polls, quotes, wallpapers, personal ramblings, advisory content etc.
Design
The blog is organized into three columns. The left column is dedicated to the content, while the two right columns contain the navigational links and advertising. The blog itself is not badly laid out as much of the advertising has been placed in the right column.
The left sidebar consists of the main navigational links, including labels and archives. Although these would serve visitors better near the top, they are still easy to locate. Above these links are the subscription, blog rating links, and Alexa ranking. Moving the Alexa rank and blog rating links down below the archives, while keeping the subscription link at the top will provide a more user-friendly navigation for the visitors.
The design of the content section needs to be changed. The large size of the font is nice and easy to read, however, more space should be included between lines. It can be difficult to read with the large font size and the small spacing between lines. Also in one post the hyperlinks become huge which ruins the look of the posts.
One thing I did notice was the different size of the headings. Normally changing the heading sizes (the sizes between H1 and H2) would look good, but in this case the second heading is much larger than the first. This makes it difficult to keep track of the posts as the second headings look like the start of a new post.
Some minor changes to the left sidebar, and major changes to the look of the content would drastically improve this blog.
Focus
This is one blog that doesn’t have a defined focus in any way. As you can determine from the description, the author has chosen to include many different articles covering a range of topics. Many topics such as those discussed in this blog, should be separated into many blogs, not compressed together into a single blog.
For many visitors, the number of topics discussed as we have here won’t encourage them from returning. Shrinking the focus to one or two topics would help retain visitors.
Content
The content is the disappointing part of this blog. As I read through some of the posts I was amazed at the information the author has, until I read the line below ome of the post headers.
Many of the posts weren’t written by the author but rather were copied from another source. While the author does provide a link to the source, I’d rather visit blogs where the author has written their own unique content.
The author does include images that didn’t appear in the original article as well as copy the images that did appear. Still, the author should write a summary of the article instead, and then provide a link to it. This is more of the proper way to reference articles of interest.
Spelling and Grammar
For the most part there were few spelling and grammar mistakes, however, providing this rating was difficult because some of the content was a copy of an original.
Overall
Unfortunately, this blog suffers from several weaknesses. The design of the content needs to be changed along with the order of the left sidebar. These are easy changes to make and could be done very quickly.
Providing a more focused blog on a single topic would help readers understand what the author is attempting to tell them. With many topics, visitors may be hardpressed to return for more.
The author should look into writing their own content instead of relying on other sources. If they choose to reference other articles, a quick summary and a link to the original article would be all that is needed.
