1,000,000 Visits to Technically Easy

I was looking at my all-time visitors stats for Technically Easy and noticed that I was approaching a milestone: 1,000,000 (1 million) visits. I enjoy looking at the visitor stats for my blog, mainly because I am a stats-junkie, but the stats provide a lot of information about who visits my blog.

Sometimes I also like to view my all-time stats – take a look at my visitor information since I started the blog (June 23, 2007). It was about two weeks ago that I noticed I was approaching this milestone. Since then, I decided to write a post about it, and look at some of the stats since I started this blog.

Visit Milestones

As I mentioned, I am a stats-junkie. I decided to look back over my stats to see when other visit milestones were achieved. The table below lists some of the previous milestones that were achieved.

Accumulative Visits Date Achieved Number of Days from Start
100 July 17, 2007 24
1,000 September 17, 2007 86
10,000 January 6, 2008 111
100,000 July 27, 2008 400
500,000 September 27, 2009 827
1,000,000 September 13, 2010 1178

The visit stats shown in the table above show how the number of visits Technically Easy received as time went on increased. For example, it took 400 days to reach 100,000 visits, but only an additional 427 days to receive 400,000 more visits. In a similar fashion, a total of 827 days passed to achieve 500,000 visits, but only 351 days were needed to double that number to 1,000,000.

While it the number of visits I received in the beginning was low, as the days, weeks, months, and years went on, the number of visits began to increase. Hanging in during the slow times, and continuing to write content contributed to this increase.

Note:

The drop down to zero for a few days towards the right of the graph was a result of forgetting to add the Analytics code to a new template.

With the current rate of traffic, I’m looking to achieve 2,000,000 visits in about 580 days, but hopefully in less time.

Visit Traffic Sources

The traffic sources is an important stat that any blog owner, or webmaster, likes to view. It helps to see where your visitors are coming from as it indicates which site is the most beneficial at providing visitors to your blog.

For Technically Easy, a large portion (81.05%) came from search engines, while 11.05% came from referring sites and 7.87% came directly to my blog.

The one issue with having so much of my traffic coming from search engines is that if the search algorithm were to change, I may lose a large chunk of my traffic. I will need to work on driving traffic from other sites to supplement my search engine traffic.

As for the actual sites that are providing this blog with traffic, the top ten sites are as follows:

As you can see, three search engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing, are in the top 10 for traffic sources, which is expected since search engines are the largest traffic source for this blog.

In December 2007 I joined Entrecard, and stopped using that service in January 2009. Interesting that three Entrecard referrals are still in my top 10 in traffic sources. While this chart doesn’t show bounce rate, out of all the traffic sources, all Entrecard referrals were the only sources that had a bounce rate over 90%. It may be traffic, but it isn’t the traffic I am looking for for my blog.

You may also notice that wikipedia is listed as a source of traffic. A few years ago I had a link to my blog in an article on wikipedia, and it resulted in good traffic everyday. Unfortunately, the link has since been removed.

While I am happy that the traffic to Technically Easy is growing nicely, I also know that there is always a lot of work that needs to be done. I am hoping to reach 2,000 visits per day by the beginning of 2011, and 2,000,000 visits by the end of 2011. With some work, I’m sure I can succeed with both goals.
