How Does a Touch Screen Phone Work? [Infographic]

What makes a touch screen touchable? And why are some touch screen phones more expensive than others? If you’re in the market for a new phone, getting a touch screen seems like all the rage.

But how do you decide which touch screen phone is right for you? And – more importantly – how do you determine if a ‘fancier’ phone will really live up to its price? In this infographic, we’ll give you the facts you need to find the touch screen you want.

Touch screen technology is as simple as 1-2-3. Okay, not really, but we’ll make it easy for you. There are three main types of touch screens: resistive, capacitive, and infrared.

Some of the main differences you’ll notice between these technologies are cost, screen material, outdoor visibility, and tool for input. Phones like the Samsung Messager have resistive touch screens that include a layer of flexible material over glass and respond bare fingers, gloved fingers, or a stylus.

Phone likes the Huawei Ascend have more expensive capacitive screens that respond only to bare fingers but offer better outdoor visibility.
