In terms of traffic, I had a goal going into the month of May: reach 100,000 pageviews. I had come close in April, with just over 94,000 pageviews, so I figured that the next logical goal was to hit 100K.
I watched my traffic move up and down through the month, and at times it didn’t seem like I would reach my goal in May. When I looked at the final traffic numbers, I had actually achieve my traffic goal in pageviews. The traffic stats for May 2011 are below.
A Month of Traffic Milestones
While I did achieve my goal of 100,000 pageviews last month, I also had achieved to other lifetime milestones, which I will get into shortly. First, however, the graph below displays the comparison between May 2011 (blue) and May 2010 (green).
I am once again happy with the increase in traffic year-over-year. All my activity online, such as blog commenting and participating more in social networks, as really shown to be paying off.
It was about this time last year where it seemed my traffic had started to reach a plateau. I decided earlier this year to post more and become more involved online to break free of the plateau.
The comparison numbers for May 2011 and May 2010 are as follows:
| Metric | May 2010 | May 2011 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visits | 40,952 | 76,105 | 85.84% |
| Pageviews | 53,163 | 106,530 | 100.38% |
I am happy to see that my pageviews have doubled over the past year, and my visits increased almost 86%. These two numbers helped me to achieve two lifetime milestones in both visits and pageviews.
During May 2011 I received my 1.5 millionth visit to Technically Easy, and achieved my 2 millionth pageview. It is always great to reach lifetime milestones as well as monthly ones.
Traffic Sources
As in previous months, and for as long as I can remember, my main source of traffic is still search engines. The graph below shows the breakdown of the different traffic sources.
Search engines account for just over 83% of traffic to Technically Easy, which is down slightly from April. Referring traffic has passed direct traffic as my second traffic source.
There were many referring sites, and outside Google the most significant site that referred visitors was StumbleUpon. I don’t use that network as much as I would like, and seeing as it is a good provider of traffic, I will probably use it more often going forward.
Going Forward
While I have achieved my traffic goal in pageviews, I will now concentrate on increasing that goal to 200,000. My next main goal, however, will be to reach 100,000 visits for a month, which will require me to increase my traffic about 33%.
If I become more active on social networks, and continue to publish 5 posts a week, I’m hoping to hit my goal by the end of this year – hopefully sooner.

That’s great news, Paul, congrats! I find that getting more involved in my blog always has a corresponding increase in pageviews…the problem for me is consistency, but I am working on doing a litle each day, and on the days I can do more I will.

Thanks, James. Consistency has been my problem in the past as well. In order to combat that problem, I have learned to schedule posts for the future when I have time, which helps with finding time on a regular basis.

Paul..the constant hard work has gotten you to this level. All you must do know is to keep that engine going.

Sometimes it can be hard to keep the “engine” going, but a break now and then is good to “refresh the batteries.”

I was trying recently when the 100K mark was within reach. I’m hoping to increase to my next goals quicker than this one. Always trying to push myself harder to meet my online goals.

I like posts like these where bloggers show what’s going on under the hood of their blog, Paul. Congratulations on hitting 100,000 page views. That’s an awesome accomplishment. I saw that your search engine traffic is a huge portion of your overall traffic. Is that by design?

Thanks. The search engine traffic, while it is nice to get, wasn’t completely by design. I wrote some posts a few years ago that became linked from many forums, so they started to rank well in Google. They have continue to rank well for the past few years so they have provided constant traffic for me. Some of my newer posts have also started to show promise in search engines, but I’ll have to see how they do a year from now.

Congratulations Paul. That is some awesome stats you have here on your blog. I know how hard it is to generate traffic for a tech blog these days so you must really have put a lot of hard work into it.

wow congratulations on that 2 million views milestone, I’m really jealous of it, I bet I will never achieve that in a hundred years
on June 8, 2011 at 10:17 am
Thanks. I never thought I’d hit that number back when I started, but over time, as traffic increased, it definitely became more feasible.

Oh my, oh my, I’m green of envy. Why is it that there are some people who finds it easy to generate traffic? I mean the work is just the same Does it have something to do with the kind of market we chose?

I am definitely not one of the people that find it easy to generate traffic, but I am pleased with my numbers. It does take patience and years of working to get good traffic numbers.
