I have always talked about free antivirus products that you can use to protect your PC. For times where it was too late, I have also mentioned free products that you can use to remove threats from your computer. This time, however, I will look at a product that isn’t free, but is a very effective application for protecting your computer.
The application is VIPRE antivirus. While it isn’t a huge player in the antivirus market, it is still a very good product. To start with, it has a ICSA labs certification, and as received a VB100 award. Both of these accolades are usually give to software that is very effective at protecting your PC.
Total Protection
Most antivirus software may only scan for torjans, worms, or viruses, and you require additional software to scan for spyware and adware. VIPRE software, however, protects your computer from all of those threats, and also adds scans for rootkits on top of it.
With this application, you now have complete protection for your computer without the need for multiple software packages to be installed.
Old Computers – No Problem
It seems that each year, software requires computers that are well beyond the specifications of a typical PC. On top of that, if you did try to run the software on an older computer, it will usually bog it down to the point where it might make it unusable. VIPRE antivirus has very low computer recommendations. This software will run on a 400 Mhz computer running Windows 2000 and up, 512 MB of RAM and 150 MB of free space on a hard drive. Any computer built within the last 10 years should be able to meet this requirements.
The User Interface
I had the opportunity to try it out and I can say that I as impressed. The installation of the product was simple, and stepped me through the process of getting the product installed on my machine.
After the product was installed, I opened the application to explore the user interface. I have used many antivirus programs in the past, and many have so many options that it clutters up the user interface.
The VIPRE antivirus user interface was clean and well-organized. It was easy to find the options to scan my computer since it was labeled in a tab at the top. A manage tab allows me to manage the application. The clean user interface will appeal to many people I’m sure.
Technical Support
Companies are usually rated by their quality of their technical support. A good technical support is important for a company to compete in the application’s market – regardless of the application. I have dealt with a few companies that have had dreadful customer service, which always leaves a bad taste in my mouth for all of their products.
The technical support that is provided by VIPRE antivirus is U.S.-based, so you know longer have to speak with someone thousands of miles away. They are easy to talk to, and are very knowledgeable aboutvarious technical aspects of computers.
If you don’t wish to speak with someone, then you can always use the application’s built-in help system, an online support forum, knowledgebase or a PDF user guide. There are many avenues that you can explore for obtaining support.
Overall Impression
My overall impression of VIPRE antivirus is that I am really impressed with what it can do. It isn’t free, however, but for $49.95, you can get an “unlimited home license” that you can use on all the computers in your home. One cost to keep all your computer protected from many threats.
There is a trial copy available on their web site, so I encourage you to try VIPRE Antivirus software for yourself.
