Securing the Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Router

Linksys WRT54GL

Two of the most popular posts on Technically Easy has to do with securing the Linksys WRT54G and D-Link DI-524 wireless routers. With many people using wireless routers at home, it becomes more important to secure the connection to the router form a computer. When I turn on my laptop at home, I can see at least five wireless networks (all secured).

I decided to write another “how to secure a wireless router” guide, to help those who may not have one of the two routers listed above. This guide will describe the steps you need to take to secure the Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G router. The steps required are very similar to the WRT54G, but to avoid any confusion, I created this guide.

How to Create a PDF for Free

Create a PDF for Free

When I visit web sites I notice many of them are offering e-books. These are usually books in a PDF format that can be downloaded and viewed with a reader. The most popular reader is Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. The once nice thing about PDF documents, and probably the reason they were chosen for e-books, is that the document will look the same regardless of the reader’s computer. Other formats, such as Microsoft Word, may look different depending on whether the reader has the same fonts installed.

Many tools that are used to create a PDF document cost money, but I use a tools that is free. So if you are interested in creating your own e-book, or would just like to create a PDF document, then I’ll talk about the tool you can use for free with pretty much any application.

Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

Using Winzip to Archive Large Files

I recently had to archive large files on a DVD and used Winzip to accomplish this task. As many of my regular readers know, I am obsessed with archiving my digital photos. I have written several posts regarding my experiences with archiving, including my workflow. While I mainly talk about archiving my photos, I also have been archiving my home videos. This is where I encountered a problem.

I archive my data onto Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs, which can hold up to 4.7 GB of data. The problem with some of my videos, is that I have downloaded an entire DV tape, which produced video files that are 12 GB in size. I have tried to split the video into separate videos (there is more than one on a tape), but haven’t had much luck. I decided to instead just split the file into smaller pieces so it would fit on several DVDs. I’ll explain how I did that in this post.

Entrecard Out, CMF Ads In

I have recently switched my advertising at the top of my right sidebar from Entrecard to CMF Ads. While Entrecard was great to me when I started my blog, I felt it had run it’s course and it was time to switch.

Similar to Entrecard, CMF Ads allows me to display ads from those wishing to advertise on my site using a square 125px banner. While many may look at the widget and think it is the same as Entrecard, you will be mistaken. In this post I will look at CMF Ads and discuss the differences between CMF Ads and Entrecard.

OIOpublisher: The Easy Way to Provide Ad Space on Your Blog

For the past few months I have offered private advertising on Technically Easy. You can see the banner ads in my right sidebar, and in the header. In the past I have tried various online ad providers, but didn’t have much success. When I did have success, I was usually paid a percentage of what I actually charged.

A few months ago I looked into OIOpublisher, which is a WordPress plugin. Since then I have sold several ad spaces through OIOpublisher, and have made 100% of what I sold. In this post I look at OIOpublisher and what it provides in terms of advertising for your blog.

Digital Photos: Should You Use Raw or JPEG?

I purchased my first digital camera in 2002, and it included two very different image formats: a Raw and JPEG format. Back then I didn’t know much about the Raw format, but quickly learned what it was, and soon began using the Raw format instead of the JPEG format.

Much like the camera I had back then, many digital cameras include the option of choosing between the two formats. There is a great debate about which format is better, and why you should choose one over the other. In this post I will add my two cents to the debate and allow you to choose.

Connect to Your Network Without Rebooting

I have had an issue recently when connecting to my wireless network without rebooting. The issue came about when I had dropped my wireless connection from my laptop, but when the router had reinitialized, Windows wouldn’t connect to the network.

There could be many times where you could lose your connection, and can’t reconnect to the network without restarting your machine. In this post I’ll talk about two commands you can execute to try and reconnect to your network.

OIOpublisher Limiting Price to 999 Entrecard Credits

I use OIOpublisher for providing advertising on Technically Easy. I have found it very easy to use, and the support I have received has been excellent. I have, however, run into a problem when I offered advertising on my blog for Entrecard credits. When I recently purchased advertising on other blogs with OIOpublisher using Entrecard credits, I realized that others were having the same issue.

I eventually corrected the problem, and explain what the problem is and how to fix it in this post.
