    • Having a good anti-virus software is very important to protecting your computer. That is just one component of securing a computer, though.

  3. Hi Paul, this is a good post and quite informative. I logon to the internet most of the day and browse atleast 200 sites online which makes my system vulnerable to several online threats. I had this virus and spyware issues earlier which wrecked my system like anything. However, one of my tech friends advised me to install AVG anti virus along with Comodo firewall. I have installed both of them and now my system works fine. They both go hand in hand and the good thing about AVG is that it takes less space and does not interrupt your computer performance.

    • I have been using Comodo for a few years and find it one of the best software firewalls available. The amount of configuration options available with Comodo is great.

I have switch from using AVG to using Microsoft Security Essentials. Many of the independent tests that I have seen have shown that Security Essentials does a great job at protecting computers.

  4. It I may add one thing to point #3…

It is a very good idea to scrap Internet Explorer first and foremost for any regular browsing activities including searching Google or visiting any kind of high risk sites. You might want to look at Firefox or Google Chrome as a better alternative as these browsers have a more consistent record for fixing security vulnerabilities compared to Microsoft.

One of the best (but it can be most irritating) plugins you can install for Firefox is No Script. This basically disables JavaScript from websites you have not approved. You do have to take a few days to train it, but it is one of the best lines of defense I have personally used ahead of Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, etc tools.

Most browser infections enter your computer through ActiveX or JavaScript/Java. Using a better browser (something besides Internet Explorer which uses ActiveX) and using a plugin such as No Script to block unapproved JavaScript can seriously save your “PC bacon”.

    • I use NoScript on Firefox, and I do agree it can be irritating. But then again, it is only irritating if a site requires JavaScript to display properly in your browser. It is still a must-have plugin if you would like to browser more securely online.

  5. Avoid sharing network connections are often ignored or unknown to some people or computer users.

I remember a while ago, one of my neighbour has a problem with police since they track he is downloading illegal tunes.

At the end the found out, he didn’t do it but someone who used his wireless connection, he wouldn’t know his connection could be used by unwanted user.

  6. very interesting blog, i like your good idea to scrap internet explorer first when browsing regularly. especially in high risk sotes.

    • There are better browser alternatives to Internet Explorer, some such as Firefox and Chrome that allow you to install plugins/extensions that keep your computer safe while online.

  8. Thanks for your tips. It’s really easy to follow yet really important. Online security is a very important thing nowadays.

  9. Don’t browse unsafe websites? No disrespect, but that’s not advice. Those whole reason that these websites are a thread is because they are difficult for the uneducated eye to distinguish from totally reputable websites.
