How to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

The D-Link DI-614+ is an older model router, that may still be in use today, so it is important to understand how to secure the D-Link DI-614 wireless router. D-Link’s technical support doesn’t officially support this model, so if you happen to use this router, I’ll bridge the gap by providing instructions on how to secure the router.

As with all wireless routers, this one isn’t secured when it is first used. It is important, however, to secure the D-Link DI-614 wireless router before you start using it. The one interesting aspect, at least from what I can tell, is that there are two revisions of this router: one that only supports WEP, and a revision B that supports WEP and WPA. I’ll make note of these differences in the steps.

Steps to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

D-Link DI-614+ - Revision B

To secure your D-Link WBR-1310 wireless router, you can use the following steps:

  1. Log in to your router’s Web-based configuration pages by opening your browser and navigating to http://192.168.0.1.
  2. At the login screen, enter the user name and password. If you haven’t changed these settings, the default user name is “admin” (without the quotes), and the password should be left blank.
  3. Click the “OK” button to continue. The administrative site for your router should now be displayed.
  4. In the top menu, click the “Tools” option. The “Administrator Settings” page should now be displayed.
  5. There are two accounts that need to be changed – an administrator and a user. To change both accounts, use the following steps:
    1. Enter a new login name for each account by entering a new name beside the “Login name” fields. Use a different name for each account.
    2. Enter a new password for the account in the “New Password” field. Use a different password for each account.
  6. Click the “Apply” button to save your settings. The device will now restart. Log back into your router with the same steps you used above, but this time you will enter the new administrator password into the field.
  7. If you are not on the home page, click the “Home” option in the top menu, and then click the “Wireless” option from the left menu.
  8. In the “SSID” field, enter a name for your wireless network.
  9. Here is where it may be different since it depends on which revision of the router you have:
    • If you see an option for WPA-PSK (you have revision B), then do the following:

Using WPA-PSK to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

      1. Select the “WPA-PSK” option.
      2. In the “Passphrase” field, enter a long passphrase that you will use to connect to your wireless network.
      3. Note:

For an explanation of why you should use a long passphrase, please read Size Does Matter…at Least for Passwords.

      4. Re-enter that same passphrase in the “Confirmed Passprase” field.
    • If you don’t see a “WPA-PSK”, option then do the following:

Using WEP to Secure the D-Link DI-614 Wireless Router

        Note:

Since this revision of the DI-614+ doesn’t support WPA, I highly recommend that you upgrade to a new router sooner rather than later. The reason is because WPA is much more secure than WEP, and is the recommend method of securing a wireless network.

      1. Select the “Enabled” option beside “WEP”.
      2. Select either “HEX” or “ASCII” from the “Key Type” dropdown. If you are unfamiliar with hex characters, select ASCII.
      3. Beside each of the key fields (there are four of them), enter a unique key into each field, and then select one of them to use.
  10. Click the “Apply” button to save your settings.

The above steps showed you how to secure the D-Link DI-614 wireless router.
