Glad to hear you had a good experience with Mozy’s tech support. That’s one of the few downfalls I’ve heard about them. Maybe they’re listening to their users & turning things around.

Thanks for your post, Eric. I appreciate the feedback. We are listening and want to continue to improve the service. Please note, we actually do keep your file for 30 days after you delete if from your computer. This way if you accidentally delete files, Mozy can help you restore them. That said, we will address the other issues you mentioned above.

Awesome analysis. I’ve considered using online storage before, but never backups (or really even thought about there actually being a solution for it).

I definitely agree with Paul on the simplicity of Mozy. I’ve put together a short 4 minute how-to video tutorial on getting started with Mozy. It walks you through the entire process from the beginning, starting with how to sign up for you account and ending with how to recover your files in case of a hard drive failure. (Also includes a promo code to save an additional 10% for the month of October)

Interesting read. I found another service that seems to do all these do and also helps recover lost computers. BackUPMAX Online Backup is a new service I think you should have a look at.

What does Mozy do with network mounted drives? Can they be part of the backup?

I haven’t backed up from a network mounted drive, only from an external USB hard drive. I don’t see any problems with a network monted drive, as it appears Mozy can backup anything associated with a drive letter.
One way to find out is to sign up with their free 2GB service and see if you can back up from your network drive.

No, Mozy Home NOT backup network drives, only locals.
Just Mozy Pro backup network shares.

An interesting review, but you seem to have missed the single vital point about online backup systems – how effective is the restore process? No matter how good the backup system is, if you can’t get your data back quickly (whether in part or in its entirety) the system is completely worthless.
